Since the founding of Koldinghus museum in 1890, silver not just of local origin but from most of the country has been collected, naturally with great emphasis on silver originating from Kolding.

In the last 10 years or more, the museum has contributed more in terms of research and exhibitions in relation to Danish silver than any other Danish museum. No other institution amongst Danish museums has attempted, through research and exhibitions, to present a unified view of the history of Danish silver.

Danish Silver Museum at Koldinghus

The silver collection at Museet på Koldinghus will be expanded to a countrywide collection of silver from the Renaissance to our own time, including:

  • a representative selection of silversmiths workshops from all parts of Denmark
  • examples of all types of silver objects, representative objects as well as articles for everyday use.

The emphasis will be on Danish silver of the 20th and 21st centuries. For the older periods, the line of development towards the 20th century will be extensively shown.

The collection will illustrate geographic and temporal similarities and differences, just as it will illustrate stylistic development. In parallel, the cultural historical development and change behind the older periods will be illustrated.

Foreign pieces can be included in the collection to the extent that they show a connection with the development of Danish silver, whether it be as a source of inspiration for, or as the result of influence by, Danish silver.

The Danish Silver Museum at Koldinghus will be developed through acquisitions and through loans and permanent loans of silver. The aim is first and foremost to shape a coherent exhibition of Danish silver.

Internally and externally the museum will promote and inspire, and take active part in, research into Danish silver.

The museum will play an active role in documenting the Danish silversmith craft through the collection of archives of drawings, photographic material, and film, video, and tape recordings of active silversmiths.

The museum will research independently in Danish silver, just as help and assistance will be given to foreign researchers into Danish silver.

Research projects:

  • Danish silver cutlery in the 20th century
  • Danish silver hallmarks.

It will be explored whether there is sufficient basis to start a journal or a yearbook publicising research findings about Danish silver and the international background for Danish silver.

Alternatively, publication can be achieved through a website about Danish silver. This website would be a portal to all relevant knowledge about Danish silver on the internet, including museums and collections, silversmiths and silverware factories, and so on. The website has been begun as part of Koldinghus museums home page:
