the danish arts foundation's jewellery collection at koldinghus

Exhibition period: September 29 2019 - februar 24 2020

exhibition opening

The exhibition opens on Saturday, 28 September at 14.00 at Koldinghus

about the exhibition

On 1 April 2019, Koldinghus took over the Danish Arts Foundation’s Jewellery Collection, which includes 300 pieces of art jewellery purchased by the Danish Arts Foundation from the most highly acclaimed and experimental jewellery makers in Denmark since 1978.

From 29 September 2019, the entire collection will be on display for the first time, at Museet på Koldinghus in the exhibition Our Jewellery. The exhibition presents some of the finest examples of Danish jewellery making from a period of five decades and offers unique insight into developments within the field of contemporary Danish art jewellery.

The exhibition is designed to highlight the jewellery collection’s unique democratic intent. Thus, the exhibition is continually expanded with new angles, portraits and the jewellery wearers’ stories from official meetings, conferences, book readings, exhibition openings and gala dinners.

the jewellery collection at koldinghus

The Danish Arts Foundation’s Jewellery Collection is a combined collection and loan scheme that is unique in both a national and an international context: anyone who has a specific role to play at an official event can borrow pieces from the collection.

The purpose of the loan scheme is to bring the jewellery purchased by the Danish Arts Foundation into the public realm and to promote awareness of Danish art jewellery and Danish jewellery makers.

Anni Nørskov Mørch has an MA in the history of ideas and art history and is the exhibition curator for Museet på Koldinghus and Design School Kolding with many years of experience in curating and communication related to jewellery and other phenomena at the intersection of art, crafts and design that put people in touch with meaning, history and each other.

In recent years she has turned her attention increasingly to the particular condensed value and narrative potential of jewellery, which appear to open a door straight into the most personal stories and the biggest events and transformations in history.

Among other projects, she has curated and authored catalogues for Koldinghus’s well-visited and critically acclaimed anniversary exhibition ‘The Splendour of Power’ in 2018, ‘Beyond Icons’ in 2017, which received an award for its curatorial concept, and the Fabergé exhibition in 2016, which was created in collaboration with the Danish royal family.

‘A loan scheme such as this one is only possible in a democracy with the right to assembly and free speech and in a society characterized by a high degree of mutual trust – the persons who borrow the jewellery are responsible for using it wisely and returning it safely. The jewellery also requires a certain open-mindedness, because the pieces are works of art and typically anything but discreet and decorative – and perhaps it was last worn by someone you don’t agree with!’

As museum professionals, we have been handed a really interesting challenge, because with this collection, classic virtues such as conservation and communication have to go hand in hand with real-life use and living history – without the white cotton gloves.

The Jewellery Collection is Danish society’s common property, and the value of the jewellery increases every time a new layer is added to the history of the pieces when they are lent to private users.’
